Update, Nov. 2
Dear Members,
We need your help! There is so much going on that the lovely Kristen and I can not handle on our own. We need an officer position filled! What do we need?
Secretary – The secretary is in charge of organizing information about members and getting the word out about events. This includes, but not limited to, emails, printing (not making) out fliers, organizing who is coming to events/practices, keeping track of new members information, etc.
What’s in it for you? Free admission to KSU dances and payment assistance for swing dance workshops
We would greatly appreciate the help as we continue to grow as a club at KSU.
Thank You!
Other News!
If you have not gotten your KSUSDA t-shirt (only for those who paid $20 membership) please let Kristen or I know.
We begin our meetings back THIS Friday, Nov 5. The meetings from now on will run a little differently. There will be a ‘beginner’ lesson beginning at 5pm with the regular meeting starting at 5:30-6:30pm. This week we will be solidifying the ‘Shim-Sham’ performance that will go down on Saturday at the:
Jump Jive an’ Wail 1940s Swing Dance!
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=157666484254712
How much? Where? FREE Jump Jive an’ Wail 1940s Swing Dance on Saturday, Nov. 6th from 7 to 10 p.m. at the KSU Center.
What is it? “Jump Jive an’ Wail” commemorates the 1940s era with an evening of dancing to the live music of the Peachtree Jazz Edition’s 18-piece Big Band ensemble and female vocalist. We would love to have all of you out there to support/dance with us!
Almost done!
We are so excited our club has come this far this year, and we are only halfway done with the 2010-2011. The October Halloween dance was a huge success, and that could not have been done without the help of numerous volunteers and the Etowah Jazz Society.
We are always looking for ways to make our club better for the community and the members, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact Kristen and/or I (Courtney). Also, if you would like to volunteer in any area, please let us know. Your help is always greatly appreciated!
Schedule Nov-Dec:
November:
- Friday November 5: Meeting 5:15-6:15 (pizza provided)
- Saturday November 6: KSU Swing Dance partnering with WWII/Holocaust dance at the KSU Center- Peachtree Jazz Edition, Swing Era attire, costume prizes, etc.
- Friday November 12: GT Swing Dance
- Friday November 19: KSUSDA Meeting 5:15 – 6:15
- Saturday November 20: KSU Swing Dance, 7pm lesson 8pm dance
December:
- Saturday December 11: KSU Swing Dance- “Dance in the New Year” 7pm lesson, 8pm dance
Have a wonderful rest of the week!

IMPORTANT info about Atlanta Varsity Showdown: THIS coming weekend, Oct 8-10 (Oct 3)
Hey everyone!
At the end of this email is a list of all the people that are definitely going with our group to AVS. If you are not on this list, I have NOT gotten confirmation from you that you want to attend. We are extending the deadline of letting us know that you wish to attend until this Tuesday, October 5th. All you have to do is reply to this email saying you want to go! It’s that simple.
Then, go to www.atlantavarsityshowdown.com and register but do not pay. Once I have a complete list of names, I will send it to the AVS people and they will go in and manually change your registration price down to the $70. Once that happens, I will let you know and then you can go and pay online.
Exciting news: KSUSDA T-SHIRTS WILL BE HERE JUST IN TIME FOR AVS!!! Courtney and I will have them with us at the Friday night dance, as well as on Saturday morning before classes, so come find us! We will wear our T-shirts to classes on Saturday, and we will all basically look amazing.
AVS Schedule:
Just so you know, the first dance on Friday night is at a place called Helene S. Mills. The AMAZING Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz band will be playing, we’ll see all the professional instructors dance for us, as well as the advanced Jack and Jill competition prelims. Here is the address: 515 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue NE
Atlanta, GA 30312
All of the Saturday classes (all levels) will be held at Georgia Tech inside their ballroom. This is why we’d like to wear T-Shirts on Saturday because we will all be together!
Saturday evening’s festivities will occur at the Rialto Center for the Arts. There will be a jazz dance showcase from 7:15-9pm, and then a social dance there from 9pm-2am, live music provided by the Bonaventure Quartet. The last class of the day on Saturday ends around 5pm, so that gives us enough time to go and grab dinner somewhere before the showcase starts! We will be going to eat as a group- KSUSDA will be footing the bill for dinner that evening
Dress to impress!
Sunday’s classes will be held at the Decatur Recreation Center, but in different places within the center depending on which level of classes you are taking. Sunday evening’s dance will be at the Graveyard Tavern. (They have an amazing live jazz band called the Gravediggers).
You can see all of this information in detail on the AVS website.
Rooming/transportation/food information:
* When you register online, you may choose to request housing for the weekend to stay with a friendly swing dancer in the Atlanta area. However, we will not be guaranteed a spot because they have to house all the others who are coming in from out of state for this event first.
* Please have a back up plan of either driving back and forth from your own house, or staying with a friend that lives closer to Atlanta.
* If others are going to be driving back and forth, I highly suggest choosing to carpool. This is a good idea in general, but especially on Saturday because parking on Georgia Tech campus is going to be not-so-fun since it’s Georgia Tech’s homecoming weekend- (yay for them, not so yay for us).
* You will need to bring money for meals, except for dinner on Saturday night (dinner is on us that evening).
* I would also bring some cash for parking. There is a $4 parking fee to park at the Rialto. There will also be parking fees to park on GT campus. I would say once we have parked at Georgia Tech on Saturday for classes, we should carpool to dinner and then to the Rialto.
We want to try to stick together as much as possible this weekend, folks. I am about to start a discussion topic on our facebook group page, so those of us who are going have a place to discuss rooming and carpool issues/ideas. Here is the link to our facebook group for anyone who hasn’t yet joined.
*It is VERY important that we have at least ten people who are FOR SURE going to register and attend this event, so please do not take this lightly!
*This Friday we would be more than willing to meet at KSU and carpool/caravan to the first dance for anyone who is interested. Again, there will be a discussion topic on our facebook page for all of this. Please go look at it and comment.
I’m so excited that we are all going as a group to this amazing event, and I hope you all are, too!
Come dance with me?
